Badger 150 issues
Posted by DA6righthand on Tuesday, July 14, 2009 11:49 AM

i have a Testors air compressor (the blue one) with my Badger 150 airbrush. i've had problems with moisture in the air lne but i bought a Badger moisture trap from Squadron which should be here tomorrow. my problem though is the consistencey(sp?) of the airbrush. when you pull back on the trigger it doesn't spray any paint until it's pulled about halfway back. it also sprays wierd, almost like it skips and sputters. it doesn't spatter paint or lay down paint badly though.

i bought a fine needle and head assembly through Squadron too. i'll see f that changes anything. i've tried making paint really thin and everything. i'm still a nOOb to airbrushing too...but i'm learning.

I suspect that that little air compressor is marginal for a siphon fed airbrush like the 150. It's only rated at .18cfm.  Unfortunately, I don't have an easy solution if it is.  See if it sprays any better with plain water.  That will at least eliminate any paint problem. Check your connections and airbrush for any air leaks.  You can't afford to waste any.  You might actually find that it works better with the fine needle.  Maybe someone who has experience with your compressor will jump in here with some help.

Don's guess is probably 99% right. "See if it sprays any better with plain water." You can also try the Badger 150 and your normal paint mix with a compressed air can. (A $10-20 investment.) If it works fine with the stronger canned air, that is telling you that you need a better (a more powerful, not necessary more expensive) compressor than the Testors mini Blue.

thanks everbody!

when i do clean my airbrush with thinner it would do the same thing.

would humidity have anything to do with it? because i airbrush outside. on the days i was airbrushing before it was humid and i had the sputtering spray issue. yesterday it wasn't humid at all and i used the airbrush, it didn't really sputter too much. it had a pretty consistent spray.

also, if i'm using a large amount of paint would that make it harder to siphon and possibly cause my problem?

It may if you live in tropical or subtropical region with saturated humidity. Did you try what Don suggested (spraying water) yet? Mix the water with a little food color (black or dark blue preferred) to make the spray result easier to see.

On the other hand, high humidity should not mess up the Badger airbrush, but it MAY mess up the small compressor that you use, making even lower airflow than it supposed to.
