What about just plain ol' Testors Glosscote? I think it is an enamel, so it won't be as harsh on top of decals. It will take longer to dry, but should give better results.

The other option I would explore is Tamiya's TS-13, which gives a nice shine but is tricky to use. Several light mist coats before the wet coats are a must when using it. Give it 5-7 minutes between mist coats and wait a week or longer before even starting the clear over the color--make sure the color is completely cured/dry. If it's done right, it looks awesome.

i was concerned about mis-matching brands for this reason. the clear did fog up but it went away very quickly. the clear is the old brand of MM ultra gloss clear not the new. now im concerned about clearing my F1 Ferrari with the decals on it!!!! i used Italian red from MM on it, do you think i should clear it before i put on the decals??? i was really wanting a painted on look with the decals.

Is your clear coat part of their new Lacquer line, the one that also includes the 'grabber' colors? If it is, I'd say that's the problem... I've tried that brand before and hated it..it fogged up on mine.

Personally, I'd go with Tamiya spray clear (think it's TS-13?) that way you aren't mixing brands. IIRC, the MM/ Testors lines of lacquers are 'hotter' than Tamiya's, which could be another factor.

i understand what your saying but ive done all of the above. i shake each can for about 5 mins each, the temp last night was 78 outside and 75 in my apartment where the model and paint are kept( i have to go outside to paint) I run the cans of paint under warm water intill they are warm to the touch, i mist on a coat and allow it to flash for 10-15 mins before applying another mist coat/flash and then a final wet coat. the decals went to a flat red right after the first mist coat. im just baffled by this.

Hi James,

My first thought would be insufficient mixing of the paints. I'm assuming that you're using a spray metallic black - you should shake well, for at least 3 minutes to ensure that the paint is thoroughly mixed. Even though it doesn't contain any pigment, shake the can of clear gloss for the same length of time.

My second thought is that the ambient temperature may be too high and the paint is drying before it has had sufficient time to level and form a glossy surface.

I'm not sure what's going on with your decals, but be careful applying a spray-can clear gloss over decals. Many spray clearcoats are lacquers, and can cause decals to lift and wrinkle (and sometimes split). When spraying over decals, apply light mist coats and allow to dry before applying your heavier "wet" coats.

Problems with my clearcoat.

Hello, so i painted the Shelby series 1 i was working on a metallic black by Tamiya (no primer) i noticed the paint had almost no gloss to it. Now i just applyed some Ultra Gloss Clear  from Model Masters and its got the shine of a semi-gloss paint!!!!! and on top of that the red stripes turned flat red and they look like they are applyed on top of the clear insted of under it. I noticed that when i got the model off of ebay the box was very sun bleached and after i assembled the frame, it was twisted about 3/16th of an inch. im wondering if the heat that twisted the frame cooked the decals and caused them to turn a flat red???  thanks for any help guys.
