Badger 350 slow flow
Posted by Hsnopi on Tuesday, July 28, 2009 9:00 PM

Hello all,

I found my old badger 350 from 15 years ago. used once. I cleaned it up and am using it now. I am not very experienced but I have done a lot of reading. I seem to have an issue whereby the paint seems to start strong then get less and less rather rapidly. Let me explain what I have done and am using...

I paint Warhammer 40k Miniatures.

-Badger 350 base kit

-a home compressor set to 90 PSI

-a Husky regulator set to 35 PSI  which feeds the airbrush.

I used 2 paints

-Citadel Crimson Gore

-Formula P3 Khador Red Base

Now I thinned these out with water, these are acrylic paints. The citadel is a particulate paint and the P3 is a liquid pigment. At first it wasn't thinned enough but then I thinned it more and it worked great for a couple minutes. Then it thins out and starts to spit. I haved to close the nozzle, reopen and it works again for a few secs. So I am imagining that it may still be too thick? It is well past the milk stage. I got it to work right for about 2 mins and I LOVED it and OMG i want it to work right again. Is the PSI too high? I read 20-30, 30-45. i suppose it depends on the feed type, this is a Syphon feed. Any ideas? I had it set to 35, then tried 40.

Thank much

This sounds like a classic case of "tip dry". Paint builds up on the nozzle and dries, blocking the flow of paint.

This is a frequent problem using acrylic paints. You can add an acrylic retarder to your paint mix to slow the drying rate, and have an alcohol soaked swab ready to wipe down the tip when this occurs.

I'm also thinking that your pressure is set too high and may be accelerating the onset of this problem. Try dropping your pressure to about the 22-25 PSI range and see if this helps.

will do on the PSI. Thanks:) I need to base some Plague Marines in a brown color. Do you reccomend any particular retarder? All I have is a bottle od Medea Airbrush Cleaner that the parts are soaking in right now.

Note that Airbrush cleaner is not a retarder. A retarder is an additive which extends the drying time of the paint.  Retarders may be found at art supply stores - some of the oft-mentioned brands here are Golden and Liquitex. You only need a small amount, perhaps 2 or three drops per airbrush jar of thinned paint. Be aware that if you use too much retarder, your paint may not dry at all. I'm not at all sure how your Citadel paint will react with retarder, so it's advisable to test first on something expendable.

Thanks! I watered down the stuff 1:1. I added a couple drops of liquitex Slow-dri blending medium. I haven't found an airbrush supply area near me but I am gonna check a place tomorrow. I dropped the PSI to about 27-30 and it worked fine. Oddly I tried the next day and it kept clogging up. Turns out it was just too darn hot outside. I cleaned out the brush, took it all into the basement and it worked fine.

Thanks again for the help:)
