Hi David,
Did you stir the paint sufficiently? The paint may have been on the hobby shop rack for a while. When left for a period of time, such as on the hobby shop paint rack, it can and does settle out of suspension. Often, simply shaking the jar a few times isn't enough. You need to stir the paint with a suitable implement until it flows smoothly and there are no lumps or strings. If you stir for what seems an eternity (say 5+ mins) and there are still lumps and/or strings, there's a good chance the paint has "gone off".
Another possible cause for lumps/chunks is using an inappropriate thinner. If you put enamel thinner in acrylic paint or acrylic thinner (or water) in enamel paint, it will usually cause incurable lumpiness. (This may even happen using an incompatible acrylic thinner with an acrylic paint.)
