Painting a Tamiya F-4J Phantom 1/32

I am getting ready to embark on this beast of a kit. I've acquired all of the paint needed for this build, including insignia white and light gray in spray cans. I've not really ever used a spray can to paint any of my previous builds, so I'm a bit nervous about the results. The paint in question is Tamiya AS-16 and AS-20. Should I just spray as is from the spray can to the model, should I prime first then spray direct from the spray can, or should I decant the spray paint and use my trusty airbrush?
