I built my own about a year ago using a bothroom fan of about 55cfm and the booth was built large enough to house a 1/48 B-17, so its got some room. This fan has no problem keeping the air clear. I built the whole thing using small sheets of 1/8" board. (Don't know if its partical board of what, but its down in the lumber section w/ the pegboards and all.) I also used a piece of peg board for the bottom. All the frame work was done with 1x2 boards. I used 1/16" plexiglass w/ hinges for the front. For the exhaust, I used a dryer vent hose and exterior vent. Drilled a hole into a spare piece of the partical board that was as wide as my window and attached everything together. To use, I use open a window, place the "ventor", and then close the close window on the board. Vents out like a charm. Oh, I also added 3x bar-type lights on the inside for lighting.

Total, I think I spent only like $80. Much better than the $200 some people ask for a small metal one.

Howdy Greasy,

There's a big problem with this idea.  Any spraying you do will be sucked upward away from your model, and not evenly coat it.  Not only that, but you'll be working against gravity to suck out the atomized paint.  The two standard designs are a downdraft spray booth with the fan at the bottom, and a crossdraft spray booth with the fan at the back.  Both of these designs have advantages and disadvantages, and a bit of research is a really good idea.  Here's what I eventually came up with.

DIY Spray Booth question

I am in the design phase of building my spray booth. I have choosen to use the stanley blower as my exuast fan Stanley Blower it has 120-360 cfm for about 40 bucks at home depot.  Look at a bathroom vent fan but they are a little more only 70 CFM.  with a few adapters and some duct tape it should work fine.  But then I got to thinking of desk space and so forth and thought about mounting the fan on top sucking he the air out though the top.  Is this a bad idea? The box will be square and not angled on the opening or anything.  I am not that good of a carpeter.
