First airbrush use ends in disaster
Posted by stuboyle on Saturday, August 29, 2009 9:59 PM

I have a new Badger 360 airbursh which I used for the first time.  I sprayed Mr Surfacer 1200 thinned about 25% with medium drying lacquer thinner.  The Mr Surfacer came out "stringy" or like it had cobwebs.  Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

Thanks - Stuart

I haven't tried airbrushing Mr Surfacer, but from previous posts here, I believe it's not thinned enough and/or your air pressure may be too high. If I recall correctly, one needs to use 30% or more thinner to avoid the "cobweb" effect.

What phil said is correct, not thin enough. I thin mine about 50%.

Thanks boys, I think you are onto something.  I thinned it some more but got the same result.  Then I realized I had some Alclad Laquer based primer which was prethinned, so I tried it.  It when on nice and smooth.

The only other possibility is that is drying too quickly.  The lacquer thinner I'm using says its medium drying.  I will keep thinning it until I figure-out either its drying too quickly or because it too thick.

I had the same issue. It's exactly as they say: thin it with a higher ratio of lacquer thinner and also turn the pressure down. Once you do that you'll realize how awesome Mr. Surfacer is when sprayed.
