Check out Matt Swan's article on canopy masking: http://www.swannysmodels.com/Canopies.html

If you are going to spray a flat coat on your model after painting and decalling (and weathering), leave the canopy masked until you've finished. Flat coat on your canopy will "frost" it.

PS: If you dip your canopy in Future (or equivalent) and mask using the "strip" method described in Matt's article, use tape over the "glass" sections too, Don't be tempted to use liquid mask like Humbrol Maskol - having an ammonia base, it will "etch" the Future on the clear parts and will show when you remove the masking. Ask me how I know... Dead [xx(]

For the cockpit it is usually installed as an assembly before the fusalage goes together and you would want to finish it before installing. Almost like it was a kit unto itself. Then for sure you will want to protect it before doing any painting or other work outdide of it. Trying to fix something like overspray inside the cockpit at that point would be a nightmare.

I use a product called Parafilm M. for the canopy.

You cut off a bit, give it a stretch, then apply it over the canopy. It is low tack but clings to the surface. You then use a SHARP hobby knife to trace out the canopy frames and remove the parts to be painted. It is easily removed after painting. Some also cut small strips of masking tape to mask off the areasto be protected. There are other methods to be sure, but regardless it is undesireable to try to remove paint from clear canopy parts no matter the type of paint you use-most often you will mar or scratch it.

Check out some of the basic books available at your hobby shop or the pages of...should I say it?

(No this was not a paid endorsement! I have been reading it since the late 80's!)

It's all about classic cars now!

Why can't I find the "Any" key on my keyboard?

Been back to model  building for over 5 yrs now and finally embarking on my first plane kit.A 1:72 academy p51b.Anyhow,I know it's best to build up the fusalage before painting so I can fill in seams with putty but how do you guys mask off the cockpit area from getting overspray?Or do ya just touch up the area that was taped with brush painting after removing the tape from the cockpit?
