Advice please.
Posted by Ultra on Monday, October 12, 2009 2:12 AM

Hey guys.  I'm about to build a B-25D to display with my grandfathers medals, pictures etc.  I've not built a model since around age 7 and I never painted those ones haha. Needless to say  I'm taking things slowly.  I'd like to know if this MINI-SPRAYER for 16.95 below would suffice for this project.  Also, how much of what would I have to mix with the paint in order to be able to apply it?  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks.

I would just go with spray cans of paint or buy a better airbrush when you can afford it.

Those really cheap ones are not worth the time for the most part.

Wisdom is the right use of knowledge. To know is not to be wise. Many men know a great deal, and are all the greater fools for it. There is no fool so great a fool as a knowing fool. But to know how to use knowledge is to have wisdom. " Charles Spurgeon

Any of the B-25D Mitchell kits will be quite a challenge for a beginner build. Franklin Mint has a 1:48 scale pre-finished diecast model which should look good with your grandfater's medals.

Thanks for the responses guys.  I'm not going for the "Dirty Dora" scheme or any other complex nose job if thats what you mean by being "hard".  My grandfather has pictures of this plane with all the nose guns and the clear glass.  I just need a good way to get an even coat of OD on.

Then I would suggest using a can of Testor Model Master OD spray.  Just make sure you shake it well to mix, start spraying not directly on the model, move with evenness across the model and stop spraying once you are pass the model. Multiple light passes, don' try to cover in thick coat - it will come out a sloppy mess with drips. Practice on some cardboard a few times first.  The stuff smells, so do so in a well ventilated area, preferably wearing some breathing protection.

I second Mike V's suggestion of spray cans. If this is a one time project, the cost of the mini-spray plus a propellant can will allow you to buy quite a few Olive Drab spray cans for the B-25D.

The Accurate Miniatures still makes the best 1:48 scale Mitchell on the market. In addition to the B-25C/D manual, they also provide an excellent, 5-parts build report on line. Yes, I know if is for the B, not the D model. But most of it should still be useful to you.

Good luck and show some pictures with your grandfather's medal when you are done.

Depending how this goes a B-17 and 24 may be in order but I shouldn't get to ahead of myself.  I ordered a Accurate Miniatures B-25D.  Sure hope they get another batch of B-25B's out again.  Been studying the manual like heck to.  Spray cans it is...I'll keep you posted.

Accurate Miniatures make really nice kits.  Take your time and enjoy it.  10 minutes into your B-17 and B-24 builds and youll wish they made those as well.
