Thanks for the help Phil, I've already painted the lower hull and waterline, but as you know white is a hell of a colour to get even with a brush. The actual shade is Schnellboot Weiss which when shown a paint chip and RAL colour translates as White Grey 70993 in the Model Color range and is an exact match!

As I've mostly got the hull painted I'll use a few coats of well watered down white grey and see what happens.

As for the easiness that the paint get scratched off, I've already noticed that when putting the hull onto the stand that comes with the model so I'm goin to try putting some soft felt onto the stand which should help against scratches.

I'm also considering an overall coat of the Vallejo Clear Satin Varnish on the hull which should also protect the paint as well.

Anyone else have any further thoughts???

I just airbrush a coat of regular Tamiya flat acrylic.

In your case, you might have to use a spray can primer, but I don't use those, so I'm afrais I can't really help there. Any of the popular berands should be suitable.

Thanks for the answer. What primer do you recommend?

I don't lmow if you've used Vallejo Model Color paints before, so I apologise in advance if this is stuff you already know.

  • Apply a primer coat first. Vallejo Model Color doesn't cover very well when applied to bare styrene, particularly when thinned
  • Don't apply Vallejo Model Color paints straight from the bottle. It applies much more smoothly thinned

While it can be thinned with water, the paint is water resistant when cured. The real issue with your application isn't water resistance, it's scratch/wear resistance, as Vallejo paints do "mark" very easily.

2 questions on Vallejo model colour
Posted by snapdragonxxx on Wednesday, October 14, 2009 4:01 AM

Hi chaps,

I have begun a build if Italeri's 1/35 S-Boot with a view to R/C conversion. This is my first attempt at something like this and I need some help with the paint. I have managed through a friend to match the period colours of the Sboat to exact paint shades from the Vallejo Model Colour range by having access to original Kreigsmarine paint chips and RAL numbers.

My Questions are:

1. I don't airbrush so what is the best way of getting white paint on with a brush so it doesnt streak? Do I thinn the paint down and if so to what consistancy?

2. What's the best stuff to put over the top to waterproof the paint? I have somewhere in my paint box some Vallejo Model Colour clear silk varnish stuff - will that do or what do I need?

Thanks for any help given.

James
