model expo portable spray booth
Posted by waikong on Tuesday, October 20, 2009 12:35 PM

Anybody have or seen one of these spray booths?

http://www.modelexpo-online.com/product.asp?ITEMNO=HSE420

It's not too big, but the right size for me and its portable.  It doesn't look like it's made to vent outside - but I'm sure it's not too big a deal to adapt a hose to it. But right now I would not be able to vent out anyway.

Of course, I know venting out would be effective, but does that make the booth not practical? Is venting the spray just through the filter effective in removing vapors?

I have been looking for a spray booth and this is the first time I've seen this one. I also would like to hear if anyone has used this spray booth.

Checked out the link.  The face area is 1.43 square feet, and the fan moves 3m3/minute (stands for 3 cubic meters per minute), which works out to ~106cfm.  That should provide about 70fpm at the face, which is below the 80-100fpm recommendation for adequate vapor/particulate removal.  In addition, that 106cfm rating is without filters in the front or exhaust attached to the rear.  Expect a difference between rated and actual cfm as those items are added (Actual cfm should be lower).

If you can't vent to the outdoors, then a spraybooth offers no practical soutions, unless you purchase one (like the Artograph, for example) that includes a carbon filter that scrubs the organics out before the air is recirculated back into the room.  Otherwise, you've just spent $120 (or more) for no realized benefit.

The filters in the advertised booth appear to be for the purpose of removing only particulates--not vapors.  What is troubling is that the ad doesn't state whether the fan is shaded pole or not, and like you stated, doesn't say anything about where the exhaust is supposed to go.  I would be hesitant to assume anything regarding booth performance and safety issues.

Hope this helps you out some.

Thanks VERY MUCH for the detailed reply. That's too bad, as I liked the portable aspect of it. They sell the artograph too, so I'll look at that.

Bob, I have a coupon code which gives 25% off your total purchase, good until 10/31. it's RE109, good luck.
