How long can blu-tac stay on a painted surface
Posted by Stuart06 on Wednesday, November 18, 2009 8:08 AM

I am starting to mask off my Char B1 blis and I am using blu-tac as a mask for the intricate pattern.  I will be using Tamyia acrylics.  Since it will take me more time to complete in one session, I probably will not have the whole thing done no less then 1 - 2 weeks (can only work on a bit at night and some parts of the weekend).

I already have the base coat done and the blu-tac is going over that and each progressive color.  How long do you suggest leaving it on before it will solidify with the paint coat below and peel off when I take it out.

Also, if there is residue left when lifting off, I read that Goo-Gone can be used to take it out.  Would that not lift the paint as well.  If so, what ingrediants should one avoid in such a product.

I have never had paint lift off when using this product.  Tamiya sets up pretty quickly and I have masked over it the same day without problems.  Blu Tac is very user friendly and does not leave residue like other products such as Silly Putty.  To be on the safe side I would probably remove the Blu Tac after a day or so.

I use it all the time for attaching parts to toothpicks for painting. I have left it on for weeks at a time with no problems. You may need to toothpick to get it out of crevices.

I used poster hanging putty to mask my P-400 and it left residue on the Tamiya paint.  I had to scratch some off with a knife.  I guess I should have sprung for the real stuff, huh.
