Backflow of air into paint jar
Posted by Shadowfax MD on Sunday, November 29, 2009 3:47 PM

Hi again.

An absolute newbie in airbrushing, inherited a Paasche VL double-action brush.  Successfully used it once with thinned model master acrylics and dutifully cleaned it as instructed afterwards.  :)

Now a few days later I try to airbrush another color.  Same assembly.  Using an air compressor at about 15 PSI with a water trap.  When airflow starts I immediately get bubbles vigorously appearing in the paint jar.  If I take the jar off I can feel positive pressure at the site where the paint feeder attaches.  I tested this extensively with water and paint.  If I slowly pull the needle all the way back I can get water to flow intermittently from the gravity feed cup, but paint will not flow from the suction-fed jar.  Not sure if this is due to the higher viscosity of the pain or the insufficient suction.  I took the nozzles off and the little holes for airflow all look open and clean when I hold them up to the light.  I took the needle out, cleaned it and re-secured it, seating it carefully into the tip.

I'm going to clean the whole set-up more carefully now and maybe try with a different needle/tip and see if that answers.  Any other ideas?

Thanks,

Liam

I just had the massive bubbling in the paint cup on my Badger 200G.  The little pointy part of the airtip assembly unscrewed itself, so check all your parts and make sure everything is clean and where it's supposed to be.

I am also new to airbrushing and i also use the paasche vl. I used it for a few week and have had no problems. I use more PSI about 25 lbs. I use tamiya acrlic's mostly, with no problems. If air is backing up into the cup there must be a blockage somewhere. A complete cleaning may be in order.

If you fix it, please post how you did it.

Hi Liam,

It sounds as if the nozzle isn't properly seated and/or the air cap body (which holds the nozzle in place) isn't screwed down snugly.

You may wish to check around the "rear" end of the nozzle and the recess in the airbrush body where it seats to see if there is any debris or accumulation of dried paint which may be preventing the nozzle from seating correctly.

Thanks all.  I figured out that it had been used with enamels before and not properly cleaned.  I soaked the body and the nozzles in clean paint thinner for three days (kinda forgot about it, actually) and then cleaned it with pipe cleaners, etc., and then blew it out with high pressure for a while.  That did the trick!

Then I let my seven-year old son *finally* paint the body for his 1/48 Blue Angel F-18, which he had been dying to do for a week.  It looks great -- by which I mean it looks awful, with lots of runs and orange-peel effect, but what the heck, he's seven and neither of us have used it before, so it's a great start.  Nothing that sanding and lots of practice won't fix.

Cheers,

Liam
