Would Future help this problem?
Posted by morto on Wednesday, December 9, 2009 12:11 AM

On occasion I have had a problem with masking tape pulling off some of my paint when removing the tape.  Would a coat of Future sprayed on after the paint cures help prevent this from happening?  Would be interested in comments concerning this situation.

A coat of Future applied over the top of layer of paint with adhesion problems isn't necessarily going to help things, as it's the paint underneath which isn't adhering to the model's surface.

You may get better results from proper surface preparation. A wash with warm soapy water before painting, minimal handling after washing (to reduce transfer of oils from your skin) and a primer coat before your colour coats (particularly when using acrylics) will provide better results.

You can also try using a masking tape which is lower-tack - eg. Tamiya's masking tape or "blue" painter's tape. If the adhesive on the tape is still too strong, you may try laying the tape on your arm first, before applying it to the model.

No. If the underlying material isn't secure neither will be the top layer.

Did you wash the model before painting to remove any oil residue from your fingers? Did you prime? There are several reasons why the paint didn't adhere properly. You might have to adjust your masking material to something with a little less tack, such as the Tamiya tape mentioned or even try Post It Notes or Parafilm.

I had the same problem using the Tamiya masking tape.  After some helpful tips from this forum, I have come to the conclusion that I didn't wash the model well before my first coat of paint.  Actually, it was a coat of primer, but that pulled right off with the tape as well.  I have since been using Floquil Polly S Plastic Prep and haven't had an issue since.

Thanks for the comments.  I do wash the plastic before any painting is done and the tape used was Tamiya.  I did not use primer on this particular model however.  I will definitely try the Floquil Poly S Plastic Prep and hopefully my problems will be solved.  Where can the Floquil product be obtained?

I buy most of my stuff online, but you can probably pick it up at your local hobby shop if you have one.

Online, it can be found here:

Tower Hobbies

or here:
