Painting with Surface Primer (Gray)
Posted by Arespontus on Friday, January 15, 2010 9:43 PM

Hi

I have a Mig 29A that I have sprayed with Tamiya Surface Primer For Plastic and Metal(Gray)

I am going to camoflage the top side of the model with Tamiya Acrylic paints but I like the color(Surface Primer)(Gray)

of the underside of the Mig. I would like to touch up spots on the underside of it that were covered with tape.

My question is what Tamiya Paint is the same color as the Surface Primer that I have sprayed it with.

I tried to use Medium Sea Gray, It is close but I can see the difference.

I am going to try Medium Grey next.

Thanks

Scott

If you have some primer left but need to touch up with a brush then spray a little out of the can into a cup or something and brush it on.

I disagree with the above statement.  Tamiya Surface Primer is lacquer based.  Hand painting lacquer paints is very difficult.  You could try masking the area around the area that needs touch up and respraying the primer in just that area.  Mask an area larger than the area to be touched up and use very light coats.  Also, use the soft mask technique so that lines aren't formed around the mask when painting.

The part of the aircraft I'm trying to touch up is the front wheel well of the front landing gear.

I taped inside the wheel well but it was touching the sides for support. When I pulled the
masking tape of there was about 2 millimeters of space between the wheel well and the Surface(gray) Primer
that is the only place where I need to touch up?
Could I hand paint this small area with the Surface Primer or will I just muck up model.
Thanks

I tried spray painting into an empty bottle which allowed me to use a brush and painted around the nose gear and wheel wells. It worked good. You can tell a slight difference in shading, but that is under a bright light.

Thanks
