Alclads New Paints
Posted by P mitch on Sunday, November 8, 2015 8:13 AM

As some of you may have read on my topic about the Telford show this year Alclad are starting their own range of paints. These are enamels and I was told would come in the expected colours. The range is small at the moment with 8 or so colours. I baught the "sand" colour which they call US Camouflage Tan FS595B and wanted to show you how it goes down.

I base coated a plastic spoon with automotive primer. I use spoons as they are cheap and have convex and concave surfaces so I can see how paints interact without having to "test" on a model.

So the base primer

Now the paint

My impression are as follows

Goes down well but I'd expect that these days

Looks right to me for the colour

Clean up was fine, I used Alclads own cleaner with no issues, You have to remember this is only for airbrushes.

I used very little for the spoon, OK its not a huge area but the coverage was fine and I'd expect to get at least two or three kits from one bottle depending on the size.

Feels nice and smooth

Cant say how it will handle washes etc and I want to give it a day to harden before I use one but I'll add that in later. You do need to remember that most washes will reacte with it if you don't seal it as well.

At the moment I'd say that I'd be more than tempted to use them once I use up some other paints.

Good job of testing and interesting impressions Phil.

I hope these colors pan out as I do like Alcad for metal and would like to have as few brands of paint as possible to lessin  the learning curve(s). Also to keep my thinner types to a reasonable number.

Interesting. I do like Alclad primers and this paint looks like it lays down like those. As an enamel user anyway, this would not be to much of a change for me. Hopefully they will bring out some RLM and RAL colours, I would defiantly try those.

I had a long chat with ths guys on the stand and they said they will have the RLM and RAL colours ready soon. Just found someone who took a picture of the range they had at Telford

Thanks Phil, i'll be keeping an eye out for that. Looks like they have made a good start on the range and I like they have kept the larger bottles. I was hoping to get there this year with the model club but was not able to. They have posted some pics of there stand on the FB page, but I am looking forward to seeing some more from the rest of the show.

Is this stuff pre-thinned like the metal colors?  I find I don't use much thinner due to the later being pre-thinned. I also find it is so thin that the airbrush can be cleaned quickly with a mininum of thinner, so I really save thinner using Alclad.

Don

Yes its already thinned just like the metalics. I just ran it right from the bottle through the airbrush at my usual pressure for Alclad. Just like the metalics you can't really brush it either, I just tried and its more like a wash that way (which has just given me a few ideas).
