Thinner for Tamiya Acrylic Paint?
Posted by Hodakamax on Monday, December 26, 2016 12:20 PM

I'm a long way from the Hobby store today and I don't have any Tamiya Acrylic thinner. On Testors Acryl I sometimes use distilled water. Any suggestions, water, alcohol, Scotch? Thanks!

I have thinned Tamiya paint in the past using distilled water, isopropyl alcohol, and windsgirls wiper fluid. Results vary, but each works to a certain extent.

I currently use a certain brand of undiluted car screen wash. Unofrtunatly they seemed to have stop selling it so i am planning on going to isopropyl alcohol which i have heard works really well.

I am a Norfolk man and i glory in being so

You can also use denatured alcohol, aka methylated spirits. It seems to "wet" better tha n isopropyl alcohol. It also allows you to thin right down, say 75% thinner without losing adhesion.

Note that with either sraight ispropyl or denatured alcohol, gloss Tamiya acrylics will lose some sheen. For gloss, I'd recommend sticking with X-20A or Tamiya lacquer thinner.

I'm currently using Mr Hobby Lacquer Thinner, and it works GREAT. Obviously its got quite the odor, but a good respirator, ventilation and spray booth help with that.

One of my favorites for Tamiya paints especially the self levelling version of this thinner.
