Retarder Issues
Posted by Haptesthai on Friday, January 20, 2017 7:36 AM

Hello;

I've recently bought Amsterdam Acrylic Retarder for my Tamiya paints as using solely IPA gives the paint very little time to settle or level. I added a couple of drops in some Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA) and shook it thoroughly. Nevertheless, when I brush the mixture onto a surface (like glass), the alcohol (IPA) evaporates with tiny drops of retarder left behind whereas pure IPA wholly dries off.

Any advice?

For any chemists; the label on the bottle says that it is comprised of "slowly evaporating polyhydric alcohol". Could it be that it does not mix with IPA?

Thanks a lot.

I no longer use the IPA in combination with a retarder. I just use the retarder itself. Seems to work much better. Not sure of the exact reasons. I use the Winsor & Newton acrylic retarders and flow improvers.

Thanks for your reply.

Are you suggesting me not to thin Tamiya paints? Is flow improver a substitute for thinner?

Are you using Artists' Acrylic Series Slow Drying Medium and Artists' Acrylic Series Flow Improver?

There may be a compatibility issue. But, Tamiya has just released their own brand of retarder to use with their paints. Just like their thinner, you will get best results with their stuff. Otherwise it is a process of trial and error that you may not want to try on your latest high cost project.
