to paint or not to paint

so the few kits ive done has plastic wheels and the one im now doing has rubber ones.  can they be painted?  Should i? Personal preference?  If I dont paint, can I still apply washes and have it stick???

I just wash and weather mine with pigments.Some spray 1st with dullcote,but I wouldnt paint them.

Many of those rubber wheels are actually vinyl.  Most vinyl is notoriously hard to paint.  Even acrylics soften it, and it never dries!  It can be weathered with pastels and dry pigments (skin colored talcum from drug stores works well (and cheap) for dusty scenes.
