Help with a problem
Posted by Declassified on Wednesday, August 29, 2018 9:18 AM

Hey all,

i have a paasche taltalon I’ve been using for a few months now without problem Until recently. I’m not a total newbie with an airbrush but my needle cap constantly and consistory clogs. I’m using Vallejo model air paints and i clean the brush and all parts then re assemble and start paint and after a few passes it’s cloged again.  Attached are some pictures. Any one know why this is happening and my spray pattern is wonky now as well. Any help would be appreciated.

Most likely you are cleaning your airbrush with something you shouldn't. Especially as a new Vallejo user.

My advise would be to break down the brush and especially the tip assy and clean with laquer thinner.

We'd be curious to know what you are using to thin the Vallejo, and to clean your brush should you feel like enlightening us.

Do a search for "posting pictures" here. It'll come up. The basic is that you cannot actually post pictures. What you do is post a link to the image where it is stored on another site. I keep mine on Fotki. Costs $ 24/ year. Easy to use, NO ADS.

This is a big website with a lot of members who post a lot of links to pictures. FSM can't provided the bandwidth it would take to host the images. Understandable.

thanks for the reply. I use Vallejo airbrush thinner and the vallejo airbrush cleaner to clean my brush. I never use alcohol with vallejo

If it just started happening, inspect the needle and see if its bent or something wrong. Funny how all of a sudden it starts to not work properly.

Also, Vallejo makes a flow improver which works very well.

Hmmm. You're on top of the usual culprits.

I find all acrylic cleaners not too aggressive, and when trouble strikes, I turn to lacquer thinner. I might suggest one of the little interdental brushes for the inside of the nozzle? If you try it, figure pretty much single use because the lacquer thinner really attacks the little rubbery bristles.

Good luck with this thing, you'll get it.....

I use Postimage as my photo posting. Easy to use and it’s FREE to use! I never pay a subscription fee for photo posting.

I agree with Greg. What are you using for thinner? Which Vallejo product are you using? There’s Model Air and Model Color. Model Air is easier and better for airbrushing than Model Color.

Every time I look at someone elses postimage file I get marriage proposals. Isn't that kind of embarrasing?

Thanks again. I’ll update with pictures when I’m off work. I have those little wire brush sets they sell to clean the airbrush. I use vallejo model air. If I use model colour i thin it. I should look at the needle. But would a bent needle cause the nozzle to clog so consistently? It’s very frustrating. I’ve had this airbrush for 6 months and have always had great results with it until yesterday! I’ve disassembled it. Cleaned it. Put it back together and get the same problems. You’ll see in the pics I took that there are no clogs I shine a light through everythin and take a pic and you see the light through the holes in each piece of the airbrush. So weird. I’ve ordered a new needle and nozzle so we will see if that helps anything. As for lawyer thinner that would hurt anything??

Just a thought...

Try a different bottle of paint.

I'm sure you'd get lots of support here doing just that.

Me, I must be a glutten for punishment for I continue on with Vallejo.

Black brings out the worst in most acrylics, and Model Air is no exception. I find Model Air which usually needs no thinning (sort of) requires plenty of thinner spraying black. Also, I highly second Bruce's suggestion of trying Vallejo Airbrush Flow Improver. That product really helps dry tip, and it sounds like you have dry tip.

Believe me. I love vallejo product offerings. The colours, the bottle dropper style. Hopefully I can stay with them. I should have mentioned I also have the flow improver. I also bought a new needle and nozzle. Hopefully that solves the issue. I’m away from my bench now so I can’t inspect the needle but the needle and nozzle are all I can think off that can cause these issues.

The key I picked up on is, it STARTS to spray well, then clogs. If the AB was the problem, it would spray badly straight away. I had the same issue with Vallejo Model Air, (sound of huge raspberry,) even using their proprietary flow aids, thinners, etc, clogs all along the way. (Hark, another raspberry.)

The only thing that helped much at all, was to keep the little jar of lacquer thinner and Q-tips handy, for a swipe of the tip and needle every three or four passes.

The best solution? Box all of your Vallejo and mail it to Greg, that worked for me. Tamiya rules.

Not necessarily, but it does suggest you are irresistable, indeed.

Yes, one can see light through the nozzle and that is good. I guess if there is dried paint on the ID (inside diameter) it will clog fast. Can't really tell. You said earlier it is shiny in there though.

BTW, at what pressure are you airbrushing the Model Air?

Still no pic. :(

When you upload the pic, choose the link line for to post on Forums, click on blue folder on the right end. This would automatically copy the link. Then click it again on this forum thread. Once you do that, it will show the picture you’re trying to post. Hope this helps.

Posting images can be an issue till you get it figured out then it's easy. I use Imageshack and have for years. Yes there is a charge but I never had any problems or adds. I can pick the size I want to upload and they come out great.

I myself am with Greg. I've rarely had problems spraying with Model Air. I don't care for the smell but it's mainly what I use for ships. I do add a couple of drops of Tamiya acrylic paint retarder and a couple of drops of Vallejo thiner regardless of their claim that it's "pre-mixed". Their Model Color is a PTA to spray but it can be done. I thin it way down, but it's a fine line between just right and watery. Model Color brushes like a dream though, I just wish Vallejo wouldn't change the color names between the two products.

I've have tip dry issues with Tamiya as well. The only acrylic that I've really try to avoid is Testers, although their MM enamel is good IMO.

I've had zero issues airbrushing Testors Model Master acrylics. Maybe it;s because I figured out the thiiner / paint ratio.

Hmm. You're right within Vallejo's recommendations there too. (I use just below 25 FWIW).

This just gets more and more baffling as it seems you're doing everything right.

Have you looked at your needle under high magnification to inspect for damage? Same for nozzle? (No, I haven't forgotten you have a new set on the way)
