Newbie to Airbrushing
Posted by Ozasis on Thursday, May 27, 2021 6:43 AM

Hi,

Hope my basic questions are ok as Im brand new here! I am a long time RC racer and sometiumes modeller and have always used Tamiya PS and TS cans. X and XF brush paint also. Today I bought an airbruish and compressor and am very excited to learn. Its a little HSeng HS30-K and looks ok for someone new like me.

I just wanted to confirm thinning and what type

Tamiya TS paints in a can - Must be decanted for 24hrs after using straw to put into bottle. Then mix with item 87194 Lacquer thinner retarrder type approx 5 parts paint 1 part thinner

Tamiya X and XF - Mixed to same ratio as above but with X20-A Acrylic paint thinner.

Thanks

Chris

HSeng HS30-K  Copy that model number and paste it into a search engine or youtube, there is a guy who does a 40 minute video on it who off hand I don't recall the name of.

Generally speaking with most airbrushes you thin the paint to the consistency of low fat milk or skim milk and it will spray. If you think about it water or paint thinner alone will always spray unless the airbrush is clogged lol ! Viscosity is the way to go rather than ratio till you get to know a paint and come to find out what it's ratio is. If it's thicker than milk some won't spray at all from an airbrush or spray spatter patterns unless you have a heavy nozzle and up the pressure. Some decanted spray can paints are pretty close right out of the can and others are not. For decanted paint I like to use my Paasche H with medium nozzle because it's very forgiving. And if you give an H 50 psi it will deliver that, where many airbrushes are restricted. You can crank em to 50 all day long but they deliver whatever the max is that was built into it. And that's ok if you know that information. So well anyway, go look for that video and start there.

I like to thin Tamiya X and XF paints with Tamiya Lacquer Thinner,it sprays real nice with a tough finish.

I'm sure tamiya makes a pretty good profit from their products and aren't hurting any.

So, for their acrylic brands I always use laquer thinner (exactly as pictured) or 91% isopropyl alcohol for thinning.

                                or

They also do a super job for cleaning my airbrush and are far cheaper. They reliably work great for me and I get much more bang for my tiny little bucks.

I also use LT, or else Denatured alcohol in my X paints. Thin it about 50/50 paint to thinner. Sometimes a little more thinner. Nice paints, they spray very well, easy clean up in my experience.

That's good hardware store LT pictured there, but you do have to be careful which one you buy.

I do  use that for cleaning but wasn't sure about thinning with it

Thanks for the advice. I found the video and it is indeed good for beginners with this airbrush.

I will try thinners mixing soon but im confident I can get that as you describe. Full cream or skimmed? ! haha

So can yu confirm if the TS sprays is same thinner to be used as the X/XF paints please?

TS are described as Lacquer,so some sort of LT would be needed

Perfect thanks. Ive got so many cans I should use up plus a few older kits where they quote TS numbers. Once they are expired ill move over to X/XF and then maybe the newer LP stuff.
