Very new to painting with silver, any help?
Posted by Teenage Modeler on Wednesday, June 9, 2021 8:32 AM

I bought the Bubbletop version of the P-47 made by Tamiya. After taking a look at it, I realizd it was superb. The amount of details it has compared to my Zero is just mind boggling. It is a real feat of engineering.

Anyway, onto the point. The main color of the kit is mostly silver. Unfortunately, I have NO experience at all with silver paints, and the only time I ever used them was painting the wheel rims of my Zero and the propeller. Any help?

PS. I heard Alclad paints are good when it comes to silver, but I don't think I saw those paints in my local Hobby Town. Is there a good silver paint other than Alclad?

PPS, I won't build the P-47 until next year (because I have to finish my corvette, and my Corsair, which I haven't even started yet and been sitting for 2 years.).

A good quality gloss black makes an excellent base for any sort of silver finish, whether paint or one of the many metallic finishes available.

If you want to try something (works best with paints) a little more 'artsy' -- but not really much more difficult -- you could do a (masked) 'patchwork' pattern of blacks, greys and/or colors as your base coat...then do a semi-transparent layer of silver over that, to replicate the tonal differences on various panels on real NM aircraft. [This technique, while quite straightforward, would virtually require an airbrush rather than rattle cans, to get the semi-transparent layer.]

Whichever method you ultimately pick, it would be worth practicing on an old  model or something like a plastic takeout tray. to get a 'feel' for the finish.

Good luck.
