No more Model Master paints at Hobby Lobby
Posted by JohnnyK on Thursday, June 17, 2021 5:56 PM

I was at my local HL today and I noticed that ALL of the Model Master paints are gone, including the display rack. No spray cans and no bottles. It is a good thing that I stocked up on Model Master paints a few weeks ago.

Your comments and questions are always welcome.

A logical consequence of the entire Model Master line being discontinued by Testors. But if you are a dyed-in-the-wool enamel user like me, there are alternatives in the market: Humbrol, Colourcoats, Revell,  and True North, to name four that are available in the U.S., and Xtracolor in the U.K.

Noticed the same thing.  Still carry Testors bottles and rattle cans.  Limited Vallejo.  Nothing new brought in yet out here.  Plastic in decent supply, but mostly in cars/trucks, and the usual old standbys in a/c and floaty things.

I cleared out two local Hobby Lobbies in my area, bottles and their rattle cans.  A week later they had the Testors racks out front for sale.  I've also noticed that the prices for Model Masters paints on Amazon have gone through the roof.

MM been gone for a year and half around here, so No news here. Except for the 100%  hobby store locally last I knew still had the acrylics. I haven't been in there since Sept though.

In my local HL all the larger bottle enamel paints are gone, only the small bottles and spray cans are left.  At least the small bottle rack was full with lots of colors.  Paints will be more expensive now, but I spend a lot less on paints than I do on kits and aftermarket.

JohnnyK;

     Well, although it is true that Model Master(The Whole Line) is Gone, Testors lives on. Now don't laugh. I bought a set of aircraft colors in Acrylic for a shut in friend.Yes, Testors! Guess what? It impressed me with both it's Color intensity, Brushability and ease of Clean-Up.

 Yes, Model Master made it easy .But, look at it this way. Same thing happened to Humbrol in a way. They cut out a lot of colors while they were under the MONOGRAM label! Plus Polly-S and Floquil are Gone, So we are lucky to have the others, but some have a unique learning curve and MUST be airbrushed, Darned it!

I just finished my first model, using "Mr. Hobby / Mr. Color" acrylic laquer, air brushed with Mr. Hobby Levelling Thinner.  I was highly pleased with the ease of application and hard, glossy final finish.  I used Mr. Hobby 1200 gray surfacer, from a rattle can, as a primer.  It's good stuff, and I highly recommend it.

I believe I have found a new standard to replace Model Master paint.

Toodle-Oo, Testors!
