top coat first or polish first?
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, September 1, 2003 10:23 AM
I have just started on my first model. i used tamiya acrylics gloss red mixed with IPA. I have put a couple of wet coat and it still appear dull. ( read that it happen when tamiya gloss is mixed up IPA)

What should i do to make it shine?

1) polish it using rubbing compound and wax then put a gloss clear coat
2) put a gloss clear coat first the polish it with rubbing compound and wax?

Thanks

The wax should go last... The wax will make your model waterproof so to speak and any water-based paint will just slide off!

If you want a good reference for glossy finishes read FSM March 2003's article "Scale Shine". The author puts a scale shine on an F-102 using wet sanding, rubbing and top coating. Too lengthy to go into here but it should help you considerably!

yeah, decals and then several coats of varnish (Future?). The more paint/varnish you have the less likely you'll go through to the bare plastic while polishing! Also more coats of Future (and polishing) will help getting an even surface between the decalled area and the adjacent ones.
