Just received my new Iwata HP-CS Woohoo!!!
Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, September 11, 2003 1:08 PM
Well, after almost two weeks, I finally received my new Iwata HP-CS from Dixie Art. These things are selling like hotcakes, so they were out of them when I ordered mine, but I finally got it yesterday. But the only thing is, I don't have a compressor yet. Sad [:(] It's killing me not to be able to use it because I've read so many good things about it, I can't wait to start painting my new Hasegawa F-4J Phantom II "Showtime 100" model!! I've read that many people spray future straight through their Eclipse with success. I asked in a previous topic what would be needed to clean the airbrush after using Future, and someone suggested Windex. Well, I read somewhere else that the ammonia from the Windex can strip the chrome off of the airbrush after time. Anyone have any thoughts on this phenomenon?

I use water or alcohol depending on my mood. ...and who needs a compressor-just shove the hose in your mouth and blow as hard as you can(if you have a moisture trap that is - that was a joke of course, I would never recommend...)

I usually just run laccquer thinner through my Pasche like I do with nearly everything else, never any problems. I know I was like a kid at Christmas when I first got my newest airbrush and compressor.

Whoever told you that has no idea what they are talking about.
The chrome can withstand lacquer thinner with no problems.

Jroden144, what do you building these days? I use enamels to finish my 1/72nd scale modern fighters with my HP-CS. What kind of paints do you prefer? I'm sure you'll love your CS as many do! Have fun!

Mike
It was ammonia, not lacquer thinner.

Hey, Greg.

I do 1/48 modern era aircraft exclusively. I just bought a Hasegawa F-4J Phantom II. If you've never put one of these together, holy crap! You should see the instructions! Looks like the diagram for a circuit board! I've never seen so many teeny tiny little parts. And the diagram for the decals is even worse. Oh, well. I'm gonna have fun putting it together, anyway.

I would have to look into this more. K-Daddy knows his stuff but he could be wrong on this. I'll ask some other experts I know and see what they say and get back to you. Wink [;)]

Jroden144,
Very cool! I've been inchin to break out a very nice 1/48th F-15C kit I have stashed away but just when I grab for it, I think of another 1/72nd project to work on. I've seen some instruction sheets like the one you've decribed and boy is it busy! Do you work in a theme for your 1/48 scale jets or are you like me and just build what ever catches your interest? I can imagine space can become an issue; anyway thats really the only excuse I have at this point.

My friend who has been in the airbrushing business for a long time told me this about ammonia and the chrome:

"Ammonia will eventually have an adverse affect on chrome. Second, if you do clean water based paints out with windex, just rinse thoroughly with water afterwards."

So apparently it is true about ammonia and chrome but if you rinse with water, which you should anyway, I think you will have no problems.

Thanks for checking that out, Mike.

I had been wondering about it myself since I read it.

You learn something new every day don't you? Wink [;)]
I was unaware of that reaction with ammonia and chrome finishes. People have been using Windex to clean airbrushes for years and I had never heard anyone mention that before.

I like to make a mix of cleaners to clean acrylic paint from my airbrush and I use this mixture which used to be sold under the name of "Magic Touch" cleaner when Pacific Airbrush was in business: Mix 50% distilled water, 25% Windex and 25% Simple Green. This will loosen most any water based paint from the airbrush and it's cheap to make. Wink [;)]

MikeV,

You get around! Heah just tried your cleaning solution formula to clean my airbrush after a session using Tamiya. It not only worked, but it works great as a thinner too! You learn something new and "usefull" everyday indeed! Thanks bud!

Merlin,

You are welcome my friend.
It sure is easier with enamels as all you need is some lacquer thinner or Acetone and cleanup is easy. Big Smile [:D]
