FUTURE (or Johnson's Klear)
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, October 13, 2003 5:21 AM
Hi everyone. I've read Swanny's tips for using this product (great site by the way) but I still have a few qustions. Is Johnson's Klear the same product as Future? I ask because I have been using Klear and I cannot get a high gloss finish. I've been applying it using a badger 200 airbrush and I haven't diluted it. I spray one light coat and then one medium/heavy coat. But it dries to a more satin sheen. It is actually duller than the gloss paint underneath? Is this how it should be?

That's the same stuff but it should not do that. Try dipping a scrap into the stuff and see if the results are the same. If they are, you might have a bad batch. If not, it might be an airbrushing issue. Are you using a moisture trap?

Hey fish,

No I'm not using a moisture trap. I'm also using airbrush propellant not a compressor. Would that be the problem??

I haven't heard of propellant doing this (unless you hold the can upside downTongue [:P]) but I haven't used them in years. Moisture in your airlines can wreak havoc on a paint job, not to mention your sanity. They're only a couple-o-bucks and well worth the investment. I don't think that the lack of one would cause an all-over dulling, that sounds more like painting in high humidity, low temp conditions but installing one would narrow down the suspects and prevent future (ha ha) catastrophies. Hold a part over a disposable cup and pour some Klear on it (indoors) and see if it fogs up. If it does, the probs are not airbrush related but are more likely enviormental or a bad bottle of Klear.

Hey fish,

I dipped a couple of spare parts (of the model!!) in the Klear and it dried with a dull finish. So I guess I should go out and get my self a new bottle.

Thanks for the help.

Hi there,

One good little tip if you are using cans is to stand them in a bowl of warm water I think you will find that the air will flow more easy and not create moisture in your air line and ruin the paint job.

I live in Australia and can't get either Future or Klear. Can you guys tell me what is in these products so I can try and find something over here...... or does any Aussie know what we can get?

Any help appreciated.

PS read "The complete Future" on Swanny's site, but could not find any of the products listed.

Two options for you. Best product is Pledge "One Go", second option is "Pascoes Long Life" which can still be found out in the country under it's old name sometimes - Rikkets. You should check my site and read "The Complete Future" again becuase there is an entire paragraph on Future in Australia.

Hi Peter,
Exactly what Swanny says. I've had similar problems to you as I'm in Oz also. Go to Woolworthes to find Pledge "One Go" Also check my post on Tamiya X22 in this section as there is some discussion on this subject there. Hope this helps.

Kind regards ... Snowy.

Swanny & Snowy

My 3 local Major supermarket stores don't stock Pledge "one go" or Pascoes, but I rang a couple of other smaller ones in other suburbs and 2 do stock Pledge. Quick car trip will make me happy.

Thanks guys.
