No more metalizer sealer for me
Posted by stinger on Saturday, October 18, 2003 10:15 AM
Well, I should have done the search and read the past threads about metalizer sealers.
After spending MUCH time getting the aluminum finish on my F-86 just right, I sealed it with Testors sealer. It almost completely diminished the buffed and non-buffed look and that bright aluminum color now has sort of an amber looking tone. Don't know if I should strip it and start over, or just decal it and call it done.
Would Glosscoat have been better? I've read most of the stuff on using Future, but have read also where it doesn't hold up over time.
I was so proud of my multiple attempts to get it right and now this.
There's a Do-17 just screaming at me to build it, so maybe it's time to move over to some camo work.
Anyway, just wanted to gripe and reinforce the warning about Metalizer sealers. DON"T USE THEM! (then again, that's just my opinion).
Thanks once again, though, for all the past help from all in the forum.
Later, Stinger

Alclad 2 - the only way to go for NM finish.

Thanks Swanny - I always appreciate your advice. I have a couple bottles of Alclad on my bench, but had already started with the Testors. With what would you clear coat Alclad?

Don't. Alclad doesn't need to be clear coated. Leave it as is for best look of natural metal. The Alclad is a smooth enough coating that decals settle down nicely on it and rarely silver. It is about the only paint that does not need any top coat done to it.

Thanks again Swanny - So, I gather that Alclad is not a 'buffing' type of finish?
PS - Just (finally) looked at your site. Awesome! Read the whole thing on Future also.
Your review (and build) on the Swallow is great and that type of model is right in line with my current Luft '46 theme. Your last comment was in reference to finding one. Any leads or suggestions as to where I might search for one?
