I read in a book about car modeling a while back, that you could use bare metal foil, draw the flames on that and then use a new blade to cut your pattern. It should be thin enough not to leave a ridge, and you can determine exactly where you want the flame pattern to be. I haven't done this, but there were pics in the book illustrating how to. Might be worth a shot, but I'd practice on something old first.
