There is no perfect formula for thinning Tamiya paints. But the consensus is to thin to the consistency of 2% milk. If you are going to go the Isopropyl Alcohol route, try to find a purer mix than 70%. The other 30% is a melange of additives and changes from brand to brand and even batch to batch. Pickup some acrylic retarder as well, or you'll be visited by the tip dry fairies. I prefer using Tamiya's own thinner in the 250ml bottles. It comes with the retarder already added and isn't that expensive. I've never figured out why people insist on cheaping out on thinners for expensive paint!

So long folks!

Picked mine up today, they've got the 40% off coupon going right now.  Funny thing, the lady wouldn't let me carry it up to the register, had to carry it herself.  I made a joke about stuffing it down my pants and apparently someone almost pulled off that exact stunt by pulling it all out of the box and stuffing it down their pants...?

I picked up some Tamiya paints, what ratio should I dilute them to for airbrushing?  The people at the store mentioned using 70% alcohol to thin the paints...?  Is this something unique to Tamiya or just a general practice, I'd assumed that you always used water to thin paints for airbrushing.  Why would you use alcohol, and would you want 70% ethyl alcohol or 70% isopropyl?

Sparmax TC-2000 Compressor at Hobby Lobby

If you are looking for a quiet indoor compressor at low cost, you may want to check out Hobby Lobby.

I stopped by Hobby Lobby today and to my surprise saw a Sparmax TC-2000 Compressor in the display cabinet.

The sticker price is $280. With the 40% off coupon this week, the $168 price is a steal. Sparmax makes "most" name brand airbrush compressors sold in the US, including some models from Iwata, Silentaire, Bearair, Createx and Paasche.

This item is not on Hobby Lobby web site. Don't bother to look. I found it at a store in St. Louis, MO. If I had not purchased the Paasche DA400........I would have purchased the Paasche.

The TC-2000 comes with pressure gauge, moisture trap, pressure regulator, and a 2-way airbrush hanger with moisture trap plate. But I already have a custom made pressure regulator-filter with a 2.5", 60 psi gauge for pressure setting. My Paasche compressor + regulator + airbrush hanger far exceeded the $168 total.

If you do not have HL in your neighbourhood, Bearair has the TC-2000 for $176 plus shipping. And the TC-5000 for $249.
