Preserving decals
Posted by Garron on Wednesday, July 8, 2015 6:26 PM

Hi,

I have a question on how I can ensure that my decals stay preserved in good condition. I've gone a bit crazy over the past year stocking up my supply of models that I plan on doing. I now have so many in my stock that it will be years before I get around to doing some of them. Is there any way to ensure that by the time I open up a kit in a few years that the decals haven't faded and cracked?

I don't know that there is a way to preserve them, other than to keep them in a cool, dry place (like the  kit box). Many of  my stash kits are also getting up there in age. Some in the 10-15 year range. If I start one, I will use my scanner to make a duplicate image of the decals. This way I can print them on home decal paper if there is a problem with the original sheet. Also, when I start the decaling process, I will cut one of the smaller, not readily seen decals out and do a test application. This can help you to judge the condition of the sheet, although usually I've found that the bigger sized decals are the ones that give you trouble. Oftentimes decals sheets have several marking versions on them, so you can pick ones you don't want on the model and use those to test, also.

Hope this helps.

Hi Chris,

Thanks for the reply. Good advice regarding using a scanner to make a duplicate. I hadn't thought of that!

I put decals in zip lock bags and store those bags in a closet.

I keep mine in a 3-ring binder, in clear document protectors. All categorized by Era.

A lot of people keep them in small Ziploc bags to keep the humidity controlled.
