Problems with 2Bob's Decals
Posted by jelliott523 on Sunday, November 22, 2015 1:00 PM

As some of you may know, I have been working on a dual F-15E build in 1/48. I am doing both aircraft in markings for Mountain Home AFB one for the 389th and the other for 391st. I purchased a set of 2Bob's decals for the Mt. Home T-Bolts to do the aircraft of the 389th. I was starting to put the decals on yesterday and found that as soon as I tried to place them on the kit, they started to disintegrate quite rapidly. Some of them I've been able to piece back together, others are garbage. Has anyone else had issues with this brand of decals and does anyone have any suggestions? For example, the decals for the formation lights on the wingtips fell completely apart when trying to bend them around the curved tip of the wing. I tried Testors brand Decal Set and Decal Solvent on a couple of the other decals that went on flat surfaces, nothing worked for ones over curved areas.

I'm not trying to hijack your thread in any way but I built that model with the same decals and I had no problem with them.  The decals were quite old but I kept them in an accordion folder in the original plastic zip-lock bag they were shipped in.  I had one self-induced mishap with one of the red bands on the vertical stabilizer.  Fortunately, Model Master Insignia Red is an EXACT match for the colour of that band.  I had no cracking / splitting / shattering issues with the decals.  I made sure they were able to slide freely form the backing paper and they slid into place very easily.  I was able to move them around to their desired spot with a wet paint brush.  After removing the excess water with a cotton swab, I applied Solvaset and the decals settled down very nicely.  I even used a couple of the kit supplied decals for a bit of extra colour.  They were very easy to use as well.

For those decals you haven't used yet, perhaps lay down a coat of Future or Liquid Decal Film to prevent them from shattering?

Good luck.

There are several good brands of decal film.  They all seem to work quite well.

Thanks Mike! That looks great! The area that I had some problems initially were on the tail stripes, I couldnt get them to lay down around the sensors on the top of the stabilizor. I was able to get the formation lights on the wingtips to finally lay down without cracking.

I think part of my issue when I first tried was possibly that the water I was using for the decals was too cool. I used a little warmer water this time and they didnt seem to have as much of a problem laying down.

j...

Thanks for your kind words and I'm glad you've sorted out the problem.  I now recall that hot water was necessary to get the decals to slide from the backing paper.  They reacted well to Solvaset, especially the red bands, after I figured out how to avoide screwing up all of them.  I placed my decals over Model Master enamels with two coats of Model Master Gloss Coat.

Continued success with your project.

Mike
