Homemade decal set??
Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, August 26, 2004 12:43 PM
Hi people...
I'm a modeler from Panama, in Central America. I like to know, if somebody have instructions for homemade decal set solution???
How I can replace solvaset, or micro sol, for a homemade decal setting solution???

Thanks

I have NOT tried this myself so use it at your own risk! In fact, I mentioned it in another post today to.

I read somewhere, I think it was on this forum, that the strongest setting solution you can use is plain vinegar. It is reported to make decals melt better than any of the brand-name solutions. If you want to try it, I'd use some scrap decals and dilute it with some water and see how things work. Again, I haven't tried it myself so I have no idea how it will work or what it will do.

scott, the first time i ever used micro sol, i smelled vinegar in it, and that got my mind churning out ideas, and this thread proves i would've been right. itstead of paying $3 bucks for a few ounces of setting solution, i thought about using vinegar diluted partially with water to see what would happen. i may try it on some crappy decals and see what happens. later.

I'm gonna try it tonight, Chris. I've got a little "No Push" decal on my Phantom that's starting to tick me off and it's going to behave or get yanked off.

are your a native of panama? or an american living there? just curious...

Tengo dos amigos de la ciudad de Panama.. pero los he estrañado por varios años... desde 1993...

Actually I am going to try the vinegar effect on a Ju88C-6 I built recently... it has a small marking on the wing (not sure what it says haha) I am going to try to paste down... it is an annoying little thing that wants to fluff up at the edges... worth a shot, I am not satisfied with it anyway so it can't hurt...

I tried vinegar on this little nuisance of mine, and it didn't seem to have a lot of affect. Could be it is as flat as it's going to get, I'm not sure. It didn't seem to hurt it at all though, so it's worth trying on yours to see what happens.

For everyone else in the forum (to be polite) I welcomed him to the forum in my last message and asked what city he was from and added that I had two good friends (in the Navy) from Panama, he asked where I was from and have I ever been to Panama... I told him no, but one day I would like to visit Colombia and possibly Panama, as my wife is from Colombia (then I went on to allude to the beauty of South American wimmen haha). He asked about my friends from Panama in the Navy and if they were modellers ( I started learning spanish from them) and told him I didnt know if they were modellers.. Didn't want to offend a non-Spanish speaking person and wanted to let you in on what we were talking about... this guy is very nice it seems! A welcome addition to our forum!

Oh yeah at the end I told him I was tired and I had to go to bed soon... and I say the same to you all in English! Good night!!!

Yea, the colombian girls are beauty (I was a girlfriend from there..Evil [}:)]) and they are very nice people...
What are you interestin in modeling? Here in Panama (IPMS), the most members are modelers of cars, aircraft, armor and aircraft, two or tree are for sci-fi or figures.

Nice site! Some nice fighter craft on there...

I mostly model WWII aircraft, in 1/48 scale and for now mostly from the Pacific campaign. I am thinking of changing to Atlantic soon as there is a WIDE variety of German and British aircraft that I like to model. I occasionally model a ship, and I am thinking of doing two of the ships I was on in 1/700 as thats the only scale I can find them in. I have only built a few armor pieces, I like it but my love is aircraft.

I hope to have some pictures of my models up soon and will send you the link to them.

¡hasta luego!

I guess this is a little off the topic, but when I wore my reporter's hat, I flew in and out of Howard AFB in Panama a few times, and it's a great place for bird watching (no, not women or things with feathers -- I mean airplanes). I often saw CIA contractor Southern Air Transport going in and out of the pattern with their civilian C-130s. And in the late 80s there was an Air Force A-7 unit based there, and I saw A-10s there I guess on TDY. This was pre-invasion, toward the end of Noriega's reign and things were tense in Panama.
As for the setting solution, once I figured out it couldn't be all that toxic (though I wouldn't recommend drinking it), I touched it with the tip of my tongue (this was MicroSet), and it definitely had vinegar in it. And I think alcohol might be in the MicroSol, but what else I couldn't say. Oh, and I might be wrong on the alcohol. So I guess I'm not much help here. Never mind.

Ahh Colombia.
I visited Bogata in '72
I was 12

Lost my..um innocence...to a beutiful Colombian woman of about 18-20 at a party, on the roof of the house.

Ahh the memories.
I'd love to go back if they ever get the country under control.
