Decaling over Metalizers
Posted by johnbuzzed on Monday, February 18, 2013 1:14 PM

When it comes to applying decals over Metalizers, is a gloss coat or coat of Future still required, or will a coat of Metalizer sealer do the trick?  Thanks in advance for any answers.

I apply decals directly over the metalizer coat, then spray metallizer sealer over the decals and the metalizer.  The sealer acts like a decal solvent, so don't be alarmed when you see them shrivel up.  Leave it alone overnight and they will be settled down just fine.

I also apply directly over the metal finish. In fact, clear coating is only required over flat paint. If you have gloss paint you can decal directly over the paint.

The question comes up then about sealing the decals after they are applied.  I seal decals applied over paint with a gloss or flat coat.  However, such coatings can change the appearance of the NMF.  So I do not clear coat metal finishes.  So far I have found that adhesion to decals over such finishes is good enough I have had no lifting.
