Font questions
Posted by Don Stauffer on Tuesday, June 24, 2014 8:34 AM

I often find, when I try to make homemade decals, that I do not have an appropriate font.  Anyone know of good references for how to work with fonts in Windows?  If I load a font in Windows, does that only make them available to system functions, or will they show up in applications programs like Word or my photo editor?  Or do I have to work with each application program individually to get new fonts for it?

fonts installed to Windows should be available in Word, - any MS Office program, really, as well as Windows based programs.

Don,

I'm a Mac user so Windows might be different but a new font inserted into the 'FONT" folder becomes available to all apps. Should be similar in Windows:

Here's link that might help:

www.wikihow.com/Install-Fonts-on-Your-PC  has 3 options on how to install fonts in windows. You can print the instructions for future use.

Interesting.  As I did a search for stencil fonts, I found various army, navy, military fonts, each different from the other.  Don't know if the military had lots of different stencil fonts, or if these are just folks interpretation of military stencil fonts!

Adding fonts to your windows is, as you can see, easily done. The number and kinds  of fonts available is staggering.

You should be able to find just about anything you wish, just Google "free fonts"

one example:  http://www.1001freefonts.com/sfonts93.php             gives you a major group of stencil fonts.

As to the "which to use" question, if your don't have a specific photo reference to go by, then any that look correct to you should be OK.

I'm vaguely sure that long ago as a youngster, I learned that different companies, during WWII, used various sizes and types stencils (ie Boeing  had lots of different stencil plates in their salvage sales lot -wish I knew then  etc.etc., but as a young boy I didn't think anything about it,  but "thats neat".)
