60th Anniversary Corvette Decals?
Posted by vetted_96 on Saturday, November 14, 2015 6:33 PM

Hi,

I'm making a scale model of the 2013 Corvette ZR1 that I own.  I'm wondering what the best way to create the stripes is?? Should I paint them on or make decals?  Text and pics seem straight forward to make but how do I make silver stripes that run down the length of the car?

I've found someone to 3D print my exact rims so the stripes are the last part I need to complete the "mini me" ZR1.

Thanks!

Very cool project, you have set for yourself.

For your question of decals vs paint it would be helpful, knowing:

  1. Your experience level in building scale models.
  2. Do you own an airbrush?

  3. Are you comfortable using the air brush?

  4. Have you ever made decals?

  5. Do you have access to a local (brick and mortar) model shop?

The reason for these thoughts is for us to help you in answering  your initial question.

Whether you are a first time builder or an “old hand” this will help us tailor the discussion to getting you to your goal, of creating your “mini-me”

Hi Duster,

Thanks for the reply!

1. I haven't built a scale model since I was a kid (now 46 years old).

2. I do not own an airbrush

3. Yes, I could use one.  I had one as a kid (my dad was a expert car painter).  Painting does not scare me.

4. I have never made decals but the idea is appealing.  I found a person who has ceated them but he will not sell them to me since he makes his living as a modeler.

5.Yes, I have access to two good hobby shops!

Looking forward to hearing any and all ideas?

Thanks!

I am not sure which are the silver stripes you are talking about- the big stripes I see look blue- are those the ones you mean?

Inkjet printers do not have silver ink.  About the best you can do is scan a picture of some silver object, and use the color picker on your graphics program to sample that color and use it as the primary color.  Not perfect but it works reasonably well.

That photo is in strange light.  It's silver like this:

Okay, it is sort of a metallic gray.  Scan that picture and do a layout of the decal.  Print on glossy paper and see if it will approximate the stripe well enough. You do not need to be very careful here, nor do a lot of measuring for size or anything- it can be a small sample.  The idea is to see if your printer will make a close enough rendition of the color.
