Gold Medal Models has decals for ships in many scales. They have sheets of numbers and letters to make any ship a particular name and hull number.

Check out their webite at: http://goldmm.com/ships/ShipDecl.htm

Floating Drydock also has a list of decals for ships made by various companies:

Also consider using dry transfer letters. The model railroad supply company "Woodland Scenics" makes a nice range.

I use them often for the names of ships. One advantage is that its often difficult to get a decal to settle down around the stern of a ship.

Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

Home (inkjet) decal printing is certainly feasible.  The difficulty depends on the color.  Dark decals to go over a light finish color are easy.  Light decals are a lot harder.  You use white decal paper.  The problem is that the whole decal sheet is white.  So you have your choice of two methods.

One, you must trim the decal precisely to prevent a white ghostlike surround.  Second, you can set the background color in your graphics software to the color of the area in which the decal is being applied.  However, color matching of inkjet printing is not the easiest task in the world.

Personally, I use a combination of the two. I do the best I can on color matching.  I then trim as close to the decal as I can, so that there is little area to the background color on the decal, and it is usually not too noticable.

The bow numbers and the name on the stern are white, what do you recommend that I do?

You can make your own decals. I got some "Try It decal paper for laser printers and copiers from Micro Mark:

http://www.micromark.com/decal-paper-try-it-pack-for-laser-printers-and-copiers,9056.html

There are some for inkjet printers too:

http://www.micromark.com/decal-paper-try-it-pack-for-ink-jet-printers,8257.html

They both come with instructions, 5 sheets of decal paper and adhesive spray for sealing decals.

You will not be able to print anything that has white in the images though. There no white ink cartridges for home printers.

Custom decals help?

Hey everyone, after my current build (1/196 USS Constitution) I'll be taking on a new project that will be a present for my dad. My parents are getting ready to redo the home office so that way my dad can have his awards, retirement flag, and Chief's mess coins that he's collected from his time in the Navy and his current job displayed in the office. What I want to do is build each ship that he served on (Spruance Class Destroyer, Perry Class Frigate, and a Burke Class Destroyer) but my problem is that I can't find the decals for the specific ships. I would like to have the bow numbers, the name across the stern, and then on the side of the hull I would like to have the dates he served on each one. Do y'all know of a website that can do this for me? Or would decal printing be a good option? If so, how do I do that?
