fixing dried out decals
Posted by gobears01 on Friday, April 11, 2003 11:07 PM
Any of you experts know how I can fix some dried out decals? I have a great model of a very old Monogram P-40 Warhawk, its old!! but my AVG insignias are dried out and peeling off.
I never coated them I was young and dumb. Just getting back into modeling.
Can fix it, can I get replacement decals?

I tried printing some but they come out to big.

HELP

Hello.

It's hard to answer to your question. I recently applied decals which refused to apply to my model kit with Super Glue, and it worked very well. But be carefull, decals can react differently, especially if they are very old.
For replacement decals, asks monogram, on their website there's a service for that. (http://www.revell-monogram.com)

Also have a look at the Aircraft Resource Center, there are many articles on decals.

Here is a trick that might work. Use white glue and mix with water till it is very thin. Use a brush to apply to the decal. Soak it good and when you are able to press the decal down without breaking it, coat it again with the glue. Press it down and let it dry. If it holds then coat with a gloss sealer and when dry use a dull sealer to tone them down. If the decal lifts up after applying the white glue, it is best to strip them off and re-apply new decals.

Tom-Tom, thanks much. I think these are beyond the super glue trick, bu I'll definitely try Monogram to see if they have replacements.

The white glue and water worked for me. Do one decal at a time and tilt the model so the decal lies flat. If the decal has a curl that the water tension won't pull down try this trick. Lay wax paper over the decal and place a small zip lock bag with sand in it over the wax paper for 24 hr. I did this on a kit my dad built back in the 50's as a restoration effort.

I have had some success with spraying Krylon Crystal Clear Acrylic Coating over old decals.

Check Squadron.com for new decal sheets...

I'd strip it and re-paint (if needed) and re-decal. There's plenty of AVG markings available out there;

EagleCals has three sheets, one for each squadron (#48-030 thru 032).

Cutting Edge has a sheet for P-40's which includes one AVG Hawk (#48-117).

Also, if you can find the old Aeromaster sheet "Fighting Tomahawks" (#48-056) or the AVG Special (#SP48-07) they are some of the finest and most thoroughly researched AVG decals available to date. Unfortunately, they may be VERY hard to find.
