Flat coats and FUTURE
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, November 3, 2003 10:55 PM
I know that future (floor polish) makes a great gloss coat which works good for decaling, but what about spraying subsequent flat coats over the future? Will there be a reaction to the future underneath? What if you used future for glossing and decaling a model locomotive which gets handled? How well does future stand up to handling?

Polly Scale Clear Flat is non-reactive with all coatings. Testors dull coat is lacquer based so it must be used in light coats with care. You can mix Future with Tamiya flat base 10, 20 or 30% depending on what kind of finish you want. My personal favorite is the Polly Scale.

That's what I do now...spray clean future, decal, wash and weather, then spray 30% X-21 mixed with Future...best dang Dullcote ever, and alot cheaper than the spray can.

I spray testors acrylic "dullcote" over future all the time and have never had a problem. Once future is dry it makes for a very sturdy coating.

I have never put future on anything which gets handled often so I cannot comment...but once it is dry it is very tough.

As it's a floor polish, and a very good and tough one at that, it's made to withstand foot traffic in a highly used area. It can withstand shoes and boots being stopmed over it for months and months. Since it was made to be tough enough to coat floors, I don't much think some handling of the model is going to affect it at all, other than getting fingerprints on it. Future is one of the toughest things going, don't worry about it being damaged by light handling, anything that would take it off is going to do some worse damage to the model itself.
