Can Micromesh Cloth be "Revived"?
Posted by Adam148 on Sunday, January 4, 2015 10:27 AM

My Micromesh cloth strips, which are hideously expensive, are getting pretty clogged with paint, putty, plastic, etc.  I used them early on in my first couple of models, before realizing they had a more narrow/specific usage in the surface preparation process.

Can they be cleaned in any way to remove the embedded debris and preserve what's left of their abrasive quality? Perhaps with 90% Isopropyl, or acetone?

I've giving it a light scrubbing with an old tooth brush with soap and water.

Hi;

I have found that if you do a light scrubbing with a child's toothbrush and Dawn infused water , this will work for one or two cleanings .Otherwise find space in your budget to make sure you have plenty of spares on hand .

  Now that I've said that , be advised that any superfine sanding media responds best to wet environments ( i/e wet-sanding .) Dry is not something I would recommend .   T.B.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll try the toothbrush and light soap:water solution. And I agree (with hindsight) that wet-sanding is the way to go. I've been doing that lately when working on seams and I get much better results with wet sanding.

I kind of figured you would .

   Although a pain to some . you know " Now , which sink do I do this in and not make Sweetie angry " I bought a Plastic Cement mixing tray for small projects in Home Depot's garden Center . It sits by the garage door on an unused trash can  .On nice days I take my projects and sand away .The hose bib is right around the corner . As is the jug with the top cut to be used for filling the tray to a depth of two inches .
