Chopping Broccoli.....er styrene :)
Posted by bspeed on Sunday, October 26, 2008 3:23 PM

Soooo.. MicroMark has a "chopper" that uses a razor balde, costs about 40-50 bucks.

anything else out there that works as well (does it?) or better, and hey, even costs less ?

Nothing found on harbor frieght, but they, HF, do have a cheap hobby "table saw", that I could see being used. Using and making jigs for a TS, i am familiar with.

any home made setups?

basically a setup to cut various sizes and angles in Plastic, and of repeatable size, etc.

It's no fun spending $$ on the items that dont deliver!

B - If you do any kind of scratch building at all the Chopper is  worth it's weight in Gold. I use mine all the time for cutting cockpit ribs to little boxes to busy up the pit. It has a "fence" to where you can use it as a block to cut multiple size pieces or perfect 30*, 45*, 60* angle cuts and of course straight 90's. It will give a slight bevel towards one side due to the shape of the blade, but that will be the glue side for me. (and you cant even tell it is there except under magnifacation) It does work well, and I use it all the time. Sure beats the old steel rule and knife method.

The chopper

Great review/reply ! I was wondering about how well the blade cuts, holds up.

Is it a regular Razor blade, or  one of those box cutter type blades?

B - Yes the blade is a easy to come by "Box Cutter " type . It is held in place with a plate and a phillips screw

Chop 2 Real easy to replace, I have used this Blade many many times, ( it is the one that came with the cutter ) cutting both stripwood and styrene and I have yet to replace it. I believe the edge holds up well as you use it in a controlled area unlike a loose single blade that gets used and abused for everything.

Chop 3Chop chop chop away !

I've had my Chopper and TruSander for years...valuable resources for scratchbuilding! A must have item IMO. They are kept in a drawer of my toolbox.

The Chopper 2 (it might be 3 come to think of it) is the one in Summits pics (black one) the original chopper is the one to the right in Hawkeyes tool box. The Tru-sander on the left. I don't think the make the one I have anymore just the black one (it seems heavier dutier) other than that I'm not sure of differences....
