I have (for some original reason I can't remember) a huge box of blue shop rags that I cut similarly, or just tear randomly.  Also, old t-shirts randomly torn and cut up make useful stuff around the bench and booth.  As far as the Q-tips, I found some neat stuff wondering around the make-up section of the drug store that is even better than Q-tips for some uses.

Completed: Confederate Squadron F6F Hellcat

On the Bench: Monogram TBD Devastator

On Deck: Likely a piece of German Armor.

I usually take a sheet of towel and fold it in four, tuck the edge under my lamp and use it to wipe brushes. I can turn and refold it until all the clean parts are used up.

Paper towels, Q-tips, and toothpicks are the truly essential modeling tools.  Fancy airbrushes, solvents, forceps, clips, etc. are nice, but those three are the kings.

Unfortunately I haven't figured out a way yet to avoid going through Q-tips like there's no tomorrow.

I break the Q-tips in half so I use both sides when just one quick swab is needed. Still, I use a bunch! Tooth picks can be reused if wiped clean.

The best way to save on paper towels is not to use them! I buy a package of terrycloth utility rags in the automotive section of my local Wally-mart for a few bucks and get hundreds of uses out of each one before I need to toss them! They are also great for general cleaning around the house and garage, and when the become too discolored after use, they can be rewashed and delegated to paint duty! Much cheaper than paper towels over all, though sometimes a paper one is exactly what is needed!

It's all about classic cars now!

Why can't I find the "Any" key on my keyboard?

I use Passport Tall-Fold-Fixture-Fold Napkins from Smart and Final; they're for restaurant napkin dispensers. A package of 500 is only a few bucks and it lasts me several months. The only reason why the package doesn't last even longer is that many of the napkins get used for wiping my nose.

A penny saved is one more penny that Obama can take away from you and give to someone else.

A penny saved is a penny that can be turned into a securitized asset, rolled up with other pennies to disguise all the burned and smashed pennies and random lint and copper shavings and receipts that get thrown in with them, and sold as investment products in a wild speculative penny bubble that will ultimately come very close to destroying entire financial industry.

Paper towels forever!!

Tired of having a pile of expensive, barely used paper towels in your waste basket?  It's so easy to pull a towel off the roll, clean your paint brush or wipe off the paint mixer or airbrush cup and throw the towel away with most of it unused.

Instead, I take a towel, fold it in half and cut on the fold.  Fold the halves in half and cut again.  Do this a total of four times and you end up with a neat stack of 16 three inch squares of  paper towels.  These squares are the perfect size for nearly any use except maybe moping up a large spill.  I keep a stack on my bench and another in my airbrush booth.
