Alternative to Waldron punch and die set
Posted by dcaponeII on Saturday, January 12, 2008 6:21 PM

My new punch and die set just arrived from Micro Mark.  It's well made and covers sizes from 1mm (0.039") to 5mm (0.197") in 0.5mm increments.  Even seems small enough for 1/72 instruments but I'm a 1/48 scale builder.

Very well made.  Nothing is labeled but really close tolerances and nicely made alignment pins between the clear guide plate and the hardened steel die.

It was just under $40 and I think is a great substitue for the Waldron set.

I'm anxious to hear how you like working with it!  May have to go pick one of those up for myself. Thumbs Up [tup]

I just finished doing a series of punches to see how clean the holes and the circles would come out.  Clean and free of burrs all the way down to the 1mm size.  I was also able to make washers at the 0.5mm thickness i.e. 1mm ID and 1.5mm OD without burrs although alignment is tricky at the small sizes.  At 2mm x 2.5 mm it's a piece of cake.

This one's a winner I think.

I just ordered one of these sets from Micro-Mark.

What do you use for a hammer with them? Just a small ball pein, or does it have to be a brass or plastic hammer?

Thanks

Thanks for posting this, I was just looking at this in their catalog the other day and was wondering how this punch was. Talk about good timing!
