A comment on Tamiya's Workstand's Light Bar
Posted by usmc1371 on Thursday, February 28, 2008 12:23 PM

Hey all,

I know some of you modelers out there have Tamiya's Workstand.  I also know some of you have had problems with the LED's burning out.  I resently emailed Tamiya when two of my LED's burned out.  They sent me a whole new light bar free of charge.  So if your LED's have burned out, email Tamiya's costumer service to get a new light bar.

I have one, but since I use a 60 Watt spot lamp near it, I find the light bar so dim that now I seldom turn it on. The question is: can the leds be replaced with others more powerful?

AFAIK not without DIY modification.  Mine is many years old and had 3 LEDs per side with each LED drawing 75 mW or about 1/4 Watt per side.  They were useless Banged Head [banghead]  Maybe the current version has better LEDs.  I replaced the original light bar with two 1 Watt LEDs or 10x more power than the original and it's now very usable.  Unfortunately these hi-power LEDs are $5 each, requires additional parts, soldering, etc. - not a plug-and-play solution.  But I depend on that magnifier...

I think I'll stick with the fluorescent desk lamp I fished out of the trash dumpster a few years back. I don't know why whoever owned it threw it away; there's not a thing wrong with it. (Maybe they were moving and didn't want to haul it around with them.)

It's amazing what I find in the dumpsters in this apartment complex; today I found a perfectly good carry-on bag.
