Mr. Surfacer 500
Posted by White Snake on Wednesday, June 25, 2008 7:45 PM

Does anyone know an online site where I can purchase Mr. Surfacer 500?  So far all of the sites that I have been to do not have the item in stock.  Thanks!

I have heard that Great Models webstore has it. I purchased a big stock of it at the last two contests I went to. I picked up 500,100 and 1200 plus some fine rubbing compound I am about to try out.

I have also found it on Evilbay...

Like Kenjitak said, luckymodel.com has it, but it's kind of hard to find on their site.  It's under the Mr.Hobby section in paints, then check thinners and primers.

 Hope this helps,

Justin,

Finally, I have been able to locate it on the site, plus was looking for a store within the US that had it in stock.  Thanks again!

Glad I could help!  The Lucky Models interface leaves something to be desired IMO.  Their search engine doesn't really seem to do anything but refresh the home page either.

Shoots,

If you order any of the Mr. Surfacer (500, 1000, 1200), be sure to get some Mr. Thinner.  It's the only way to really clean up the excess.

Thanks Fred.  I have also heard that 91% Isopropyl Alcohol will also work.  I am looking at getting some Mr. Thinner too.

I have read that Mr Surfacer can be cleaned up with alcohol, but it doesn't seem to work for me.

I'd second the "Mr Color thinner" because it's a styrene-friendly lacquer thinner (won't melt your model). Make sure you get "Mr Color" (lacquer) thinner, not "Mr Hobby" (acrylic) thinner.

On the other hand, Tamiya's version (Liquid Surface Primer) cleans up well with alcohol. (Well, ethyl alcohol anyway)

I tried using 91% alcohol and it took so long and did such a poor job, I just put the build on hold until I was able to get the Mr. Thinner.

I ordered some 500 and Mr. Color Thinner from Burbanks House of Hobbies today.  I also found a Mission Models Micro Chisel there as well...Finally!Propeller [8-]  I have had much more luck with them than Great Models...They are incredibly slow...Grumpy [|(]

Don't bother with Mr Thinner, just get cellulose thinners from any DIY or art shop.  You can also make your own with cellulose thinners and humbrol putty, can be thinned to a consistency to brush on.  Superb supplier but don't know if he ships to US

Stupid question...what does Mr. Surfacer do?  Isn't it a primer and if it a primer what does the 500, 100, or 1200 mean?

Many use it as a primer.....it is like a putty that has been thinned into fluid and can be sprayed or brushed on.

500 is the coarsest and thickest, 1000 is rather medium and 1200 is quite thin.

You can fill small seams, scratches and defects.....it is great stuff! You should use lacquer thinner for thinning and clean up.

Regular lacquer thinner also works.

if there is a woodworking store in your town, Behlen or Mylands makes a celluose thinner, I think. I know they make lacquers and lacquer retarder.

91% Rubbing alcohol also works well with Mr. Surfacer 500.

Where does one obtain 91% alcohol? I've not been able to find any locally.

I have never used it before so I was getting a test bottle for each.  not sure if I am going to prime with it.  I am thinking I will not due to the price per bottle.  I have never had a problem with krylon primer.  But I may try on a small kit to see how well it works.
