I like to shoot backdrops appropriate for my modeling subjects, to photograph my models against. I have a grass field I use for early or WW1 subjects, and a small to medium size airport for bizjets and other civilian planes. But it was not really appropriate for modern commercial planes. I had been looking for a way to photograph the terminal at MSP for a long time, and couldn't find a decent vantage point that my telephoto lens was long enough for.
They just opened a new public viewing area at the airport. It is right in the middle of the airport, accessed by a tunnel under one of the parallel runways. It is surrounded by a pretty high security fence, but there are picnic tables there. Standing on one of the tables, I was able to shoot over the fence on Saturday, and got some lovely shots that I will print out for backgrounds.
Only sad thing is, winter weather is starting here this week, and since I use sunlight for these background shots, I may not be able to use the backdrops till next spring :-(
