Airliner backdrop
Posted by Don Stauffer on Monday, November 16, 2015 9:29 AM

I like to shoot backdrops appropriate for my modeling subjects, to photograph my models against.  I have a grass field I use for early or WW1 subjects, and a small to medium size airport for bizjets and other civilian planes.  But it was not really appropriate for modern commercial planes.  I had been looking for a way to photograph the terminal at MSP for a long time, and couldn't find a decent vantage point that my telephoto lens was long enough for.

They just opened a new public viewing area at the airport. It is right in the middle of the airport, accessed by a tunnel under one of the parallel runways. It is surrounded by a pretty high security fence, but there are picnic tables there.  Standing on one of the tables, I was able to shoot over the fence on Saturday, and got some lovely shots that I will print out for backgrounds.

Only sad thing is, winter weather is starting here this week, and since I use sunlight for these background shots, I may not be able to use the backdrops till next spring :-(

Here is the first backdrop I made from the shots.  This is the terminal shot, with some pavement and grass cropped out- I have already made an expanded piece of the pavement for the model to sit on.  I will do one other backdrop from this shoot, ramp only, a slight ways from the terminal. I also shot the tower, and may do a backdrop later of the tower and section of ramp.

Nice photo don. Sad to say,but in this day and age you may want to make your intentions clear to tsa,or other authority. They see a guy standing on a table with a telephoto, they could get the wrong idea. Mike

Ah, that is the good thing about a public viewing area.  There were at least a half dozen people standing on those tables taking pictures of airplanes when I was there.  I assume the airport police keep watch pretty well on that area, and they are used to seeing folks taking pictures there.  That is why I was so happy that they opened that area, else if I tried taking pictures anywhere else around the airport I was afraid I would be stopped.
