Moebius 1/8 scale Frankenstein

Denis Lange
Ashland, Ohio

“From the first time I saw the promo picture of Moebius’ Frankenstein, I couldn’t wait to build it,” says Denis of the 1/8 scale monster. “The sculpt is from a promo photo taken of Boris Karloff during the shooting of the original movie in 1931. It’s similar to the first time you actually see him in the film.” Denis painted with Tamiya acrylics and Model Master enamels, “with lots of dry-brushing on the floor and wall.”

I think this Moebius rendition of "Frankenstein's Monster" is terrible. Not the model builder's craftsmanship but Moebius's craftsmanship at recreating the Face. It looks like Jimmy Dean dressed up as Frankenstein's monster. Too thin, Too Nice and the ears are way too big. The suit is too small and no droopy eye lids like Karloff's. I think the builder should have rethought the type of paint he used on the clothes. The suit looks like it's black leather. Should have used a flat finish. The flesh tone is nice but the builder obviously did not look at a picture of that 1931 scene. No dark circles under the eyes or dead flesh look. The actual make-up used for that scene was slightly Greenish even though it was a black and white film. Revell's (used to be Aurora's)version is much better and looks exactly like Karloff did in the second Frankenstein movie. I say ** two stars.

My turn for a reply... the Moebius Frankenstein sculpt may not be the most accurate... but it's the best we've been offered in styrene in almost 50 years!!!! I ended up building two of these kits because I wasn't completely satisfied with this one, and I made many modifications to the second kit which really helped with the over all appeal. I did study the promo photo and added some darkness to the eyes but really did not want it to be as dark as shown in the photo, also didn't use the greenish coloring because I liked the more natural flesh colors. I have built several of the Aurora Frankenstein kits and although it has tremendous nostalgic appeal it looks more like the Glenn Strange Frankenstein than Boris Karloff. Just some of my thoughts.
