After building and photographing his rendition of Special
Hobby’s 1/48 scale Shawnee CH-21C as Chicken Runner, Richard wrote: “I chose the model from having close
ties to the 57th AVN Co. I flew into Saigon on Jan. 14, 1962, as a member of
the 45th Transportation Battalion. I lived at the Rex Hotel and moved with the
battalion to Tent City at Tan Son Nhut.” Later in his career Richard flew on
and maintained CH-21s in Alaska at Fort Greely’s arctic test center. He retired
with 22 years of service and, at 75, is still modeling up a storm.
