Bruce Morris
Belmont, California

Inspired by Luciano Rodriguez’s article on painting a Soviet heavy tank (May 2011 FSM), Bruce dug out a Tamiya 1/35 scale KV-2 Gigant to try a three-tone camouflage of his own. “I didn’t follow Mr. Rodriguez’s methodology exactly,” Bruce writes. “Instead, I used Tamiya acrylics masked with Silly Putty to create the three-tone base, then aged and weathered it with washes and pin washes of artist’s oils and mineral spirits. I finished off by dry brushing with a mixture of artist's oils (50 percent white, 20 percent sepia, 20 percent yellow ocher light, and 10 percent forest green). It really made the hex bolt heads stand out on the rear deck. Because the figure that came in the box was inappropriate for the period when the Soviets used the three-tone camouflage (1941-42), I selected a resin figure from Jaguar that had the correct uniform for the defense of Leningrad.”
