Larry built a 1/192 scale Edmund Fitzgerald as it appeared on Nov. 10, 1975, when the ore carrier sank at the east end of Lake Superior, just a few miles from the safety of Whitefish Bay, with the loss of all 29 hands. The model is in memory of his wife’s uncle, Freddie Beetcher, one of the crew. “My wife and I grew up in Superior, Wis., and her father and several uncles were Great Lakes seamen,” Larry says. The hull is layered basswood; deck details and houses are built from styrene. “Crowning the deck was the most difficult part,” he says. He also used aftermarket anchors, screws, and photoetched-metal railings, and adds details whenever he discovers new or better photos.
