Doug Peterson

Onalaska, Wisconsin

Doug’s Monogram 1/48 scale B-17G depicts Tailwind of the 306th Bomb Group, 368th Bomb Squadron. He designed the nose-art and tail decals using images from the 306th BG association’s website. To portray spinning props, he scanned the kit parts and modified the images with a “spin blur” function in Adobe Photoshop. Then he printed the images on clear adhesive-label stock he mounted on clear plastic discs. “More art than science,” he says. “The props were the hardest part of the build until I got the bright idea to use label stock instead of trying to make decals from the images.” Doug built the model for a friend whose brother was Tailwind’s bombardier, killed in action when the plane was shot down over Germany in September 1944. “He had no photos of his brother’s aircraft, so I obliged him with the next best thing,” Doug says.
